Money has been set aside for the eastern gateway on Bathurst Road this year, while Molong Road, Cargo Road, the Escort Way and Orange Regional Airport will be in future budgets.

The Bathurst Road design is set to be the grandest, with the name 'Orange' mounted on stone at a cost of $93,000.

It could be located at the gateway park, where the metal cows are located, or at the intersection of Bathurst Road and the Northern Distributor Road.

The other four would be built of hardwood with an expected cost of between $46,000 and $89,000, fully planted out.

Orange City Council has resolved to seek concept designs and costings for the signage.

Parks, trees and waterways committee member and councillor Stephen Nugent supported the NDR location, saying those who took the bypass would miss a sign on Bathurst Road.

Cr Nugent said the signs would not necessarily replace the existing green pylon signs.

"But they're of a more substantial nature and something that's designed to show the character of Orange rather than the more generic signage we currently have in place," he said.

Asked about the overall condition of Bathurst Road, with the empty Bunnings store, row of takeaway premises and some housing in disrepair, Cr Nugent acknowledged it "isn't ideal at the moment", although there was a limited amount the council could do.

"Maybe once we've upgraded the CBD, we can turn our attention to other areas," he said.

The Spring Hill committee is looking into its own signage.
