We are all aware of the problem our addiction to plastic has caused the planet.
It is clogging our streets, landfill, waterways and most alarmingly, there are vast rafts of plastic floating in our oceans.
It is well recognised that plastic is causing harm to the environment and the health of our wildlife, and, ultimately, ourselves.
It is also recognised that we need to do something about it.
The message that we get from Plastic Free July is that we as individuals can each do our bit to do something about the problem of plastic.
We can each refuse to use or accept any form of plastic designed to be used once, and then to end up in landfill or in our waterways. The most common culprits are single use plastic bags, plastic straws, single use coffee cups and plastic containers.
Plastic Free July encourages us to consider our use of these items and other types of plastic.
It is hoped that by stopping and evaluating our use of plastic, especially the above items, individuals may be inspired to turn to alternatives, thereby drastically reducing their contribution to the plastic waste stream.
It is also hoped that we may through our actions motivate others in the wider community to reduce their use of plastic.
A helpful way to start is to access the Plastic Free July 2019 website and take the Pesky Plastics Quiz.
By taking the quiz you will discover for yourself your level of plastic usage and where improvements need to be made.
The second step on your journey to plastic freedom is to sign up to the Plastic Free Challenge, which you can also do on the Plastic Free July 2019 website.
The message we get is that we as individuals can each do our bit to do something about the problem of plastic.
