Year 11 student Thomas Lloyd, 16, is one of 42 students who have been selected to take part in the Education Week initiative and said he is interested in seeing how the department flows from the city out to the country.
He said he wanted to see the leadership structure, how people in different roles work together to form one big team.
Thomas said the program will involve participants spending two days in Sydney and at the department's offices in Parramatta in the first week of August.
This partnership in learning and action helps build a better education system.

Thomas said he signed up after hearing about the experience of his friend Tom Radnedge who took part last year.
This year's participants will work with education department staff to introduce positive change for schools and student learning and have the opportunity to influence system development.
They will also take part in creative and cultural advocacy and leadership workshops with industry and education experts.
Department of Education executive director Lisa Alonso Love said the Education Week theme was 'Every student, every voice', which provided an opportunity for Secretary for a Day participants to make an impact on decisions that affect their learning.
She said recent research, showed that acting on the students' ideas, opinions and expertise, and working with students had a positive affect on their learning and well-being.
"This partnership in learning and action helps build a better education system," Ms Alonso Love said.
"By inviting our students to share their perspectives, experiences and solutions, they can actively influence our decision-making and help shape our system to be the best education in Australia."
