The best of the best performers on Orange's sporting fields, pitches, courts, tracks and lanes will be vying for the title of sportsperson of the year in Orange City Council's 2018 sports award.

The gong, which covers feats achieved in 2018, has had the senior section of the award combined with the open age award this year to accommodate the broad swathe of talent across the board.
The 2017 winner Jason Belmonte has been nominated after another strong season, but will be challenged by Ben Anderson, Eva Reith-Snare and Phoebe Litchfield, who all excelled at the highest level last year.
Anderson cleaned up at NSW state champions and at the national track junior series, while Reith-Snare picked up a swathe of NSW selections in hockey and softball, as well as making the Futuroos squad and Litchfield made a number of sides in cricket and hockey.
However, hockey gun Pip Mannix, bowler Nick Flannery, triathletes Lauren Kerwick and Rory Thornhill, athlete Ebony Hay and swimmer Francesca Chitukudza all boast huge 2018 credentials of their own.
Rowing's Maggie Noonan and Maggie Yeomans, polocrosse's Julia Stuart, rugby union's Donny Freeman, martial arts' Bailey Clancey and Dallas George - who's a karate and Muay Thai gun, while Jack Hunter was also nominated for the individual award.

The teams award is back again, with seven teams in line for recognition for their 2018 achievements.
The Orange open's netball side which claimed the NSW WCW regional state league competition before coming fourth in the Inter-regional Championship in September is in line, as is the dominant Orange Thunder under 16s and under 12s touch sides, which both dominated through 2018.

The Orange and District Pistol Club's WA1500 team were also nominated after Peter and Dean Burs' effort at the European International Pistol Championship and NSW state championships.
The Orange over-40s men's hockey outfit which won the NSW state championship was nominated, as were the Orange Emus and Tigers' senior men's sides for their 2018 premierships in the Blowes Clothing Cup and Central West AFL respectively.

Orange City Council's chair of the sport and recreation community committee Jason Hamling said the awards showed the "amazing talent" in Orange.
"The Orange Sports Awards are a fantastic way to recognise the significant achievements of our local sportsmen and sportswomen," he said.
"All of this year's finalists in the Sportsperson of the Year category have enjoyed success at both a state and national level which is a credit their commitment and dedication to their chosen sport.
"The dominance of our sporting teams is also evident by a record number of finalists in the Team of the Year category."
The awards are handed out at the Orange Civic Theatre on Wednesday night from 6.30pm.
