Jesse Wayne Zelukovic, 30 of Baker Street in Spring Hill, received an intensive corrections order in Orange Local Court on Wednesday.
Police were driving along Millthorpe Road at Blayney just after 4pm on March 2 when they spotted Zelukovic's blue Subaru travelling north.
Officers spotted the car had no front number plate and the rear had been painted over.
Pulling him over, Zelukovic admitted he did not have a licence.
You're facing jail because you chose to drive and the explanation you had was pretty appalling.
- Magistrate Elizabeth Ellis
He said the plate was originally from his orange Holden Commodore and he painted it because it looked better.
Later, he told community corrections he drove that day because he and his housemates "wanted drugs".
Solicitor Paul Johnson said neither his client's record, nor the report from community corrections, were the best the court had ever seen.
"I'm suggesting there are a number of community corrections orders in place being called up and called up and called up," he said.
"It looks worse than it is."
Magistrate Elizabeth Ellis warned Zelukovic if he drove again during the next nine months, he would face the parole board, not the court.
"They will decide how much time you have to serve," she said.
"I'm not quite sure what has to happen to convince you you are a known driver - you're facing jail because you chose to drive and the explanation you had was pretty appalling."
The intensive corrections order also included a requirement to abstain from drugs and alcohol for six months and Zelukovic was disqualified from driving for a further six months.
