Member for Orange Phil Donato will call for action from the state government after tabling a petition signed by 10,200 people who are demanding a better rail service.

The debate comes two days after it was announced in the state budget the introduction of a second daily Bullet train between Bathurst and Sydney would be fast-tracked to start this spring.

This train is due to depart Bathurst at 7.30am each day and return about 7pm.

The government has not said whether a connecting bus would be provided to Orange, as exists with the current service which departs Orange at 4.50am to meet the train at Bathurst.

Mr Donato said the budget did not answer concerns about transport for Orange.

"We really need to look at improving the rail and road corridors," he said.

"There will need to be infrastructure upgrades. I will certainly continue to push for rail upgrades, roads as well."

Mr Donato said the budget had also not provided enough in other areas for Orange, particularly health.

"I don't think the budget is anything to jump up and down about for Orange. I would have liked to see more money coming back to the electorate," he said.

Transport Minister Paul Toole said he was aware of the call for a better service for Orange.

Mr Toole said getting the second Bullet rail service up and running was the current priority.

"There's still a lot of work that needs to be done on the line between Bathurst and Orange but there will be an opportunity to look at it again in the future," he said.

Orange Rail Action Group chairman Dr Peter Bilenkij said he was heartened by Mr Toole's response.

"He's acknowledged us and he said there is still a lot of work to be done on the line," he said.

Dr Bilenkij said introducing a connecting bus was "better than nothing.

"That could be a second option," he said.

Dr Bilenkij said Orange needed the Bullet train extended to Orange or a morning train from Dubbo that would stop at Orange.

However, he said that might not happen for several years, until a new train servicing facility was built at Dubbo and the proposed new fleet of regional trains was provided.

"We've made our case very strong, 10,200 people have signed the petition," he said.

Dr Bilenkij said extending the Bullet to Orange would require stabling facilities and addressing crew rostering.

He said the debate was due to be live streamed on the state parliamentary website from 4.30pm.
