THE news of a $2.9 billion payout to two field workers in the USA who had used Roundup (active ingredient glyphosate) for the past 30 years, and contracted cancer, must have sent shivers down the spine of Bayer.

Also of concern, no doubt, is the prospect of having to pay compensation to another 1300 American residents who are contesting the authenticity of the claim by Bayer that Roundup is safe to use.
No doubt there are just as many residents in Europe and Australasia who will have their day in court as well.
I believe the ratepayers of Orange deserve an explanation as to the extent of usage of the chemical and to the council's overall policy.
Just to add insult to injury there is every chance that it will not be just field workers who lodge a legal claim by those millions of resident of the USA who consume contaminated food.
As examples, take a look at the following facts, sourced from the Rodale Institute in the USA:
- Glyphosate was found in 39 out of 44 restaurant food samples tested at chains like Panera Bread, Dunkin' Donuts, Papa John's, McDonald's, Olive Garden, and more.
- The highest glyphosate levels were found in conventional wholegrain or multigrain foods, usually considered to be a healthy choice by consumers.
- The highest level in all 44 samples was found in a wholegrain bagel from Panera Bread.
- Dunkin' Donuts Arabica coffee and McDonald's unsweetened iced tea also tested positive for glyphosate.
All of this raises a question about the possible usage of Roundup by councils in Australia.
While it is possible that Bayer will face the brunt of the any legal action by consumers in Australia it not inconceivable that a claim could be made against an employer should it be determined that employees were required to use that particular chemical.
The Sun-Herald (June 2, 2019) stated that Fairfield City Council has abandoned the use of Roundup, while Willoughby, Ku-ring-gui, Sutherland and Waverley are reviewing their use of the chemical.
I believe the ratepayers of Orange deserve an explanation as to the extent of usage of the chemical and to the council's overall policy now that a direct link has been found between Roundup and cancer.
