Cooking, cleaning, driving your child around, teaching, personal assistance tasks, laundry, on-call nursing and psychology services are among the almost full-time tasks performed by every parent.
And now it's possible to calculate, in terms of pure dollars and cents, precisely what those hours are worth to the typical Orange parent.
As an example, seven hours a week cooking for children, for the 52 weeks in a year, adds up to a total of 364 hours cooking.
So, if the average wage for a chef was $25 an hour, then the estimated salary for just that one job would be $9100.
Using the calculator provided by the Funky Pigeon blog, the Central Western Daily entered seven hours a week for each of the eight tasks listed above.
At the standard industry rates, a parent in Orange would receive an annual salary of $93,191.
By way of comparison, a parent undertaking those same tasks elsewhere in the Central West would earn less - $92,958 in Wellington, $89,628 in Dubbo, and $88,015 in Mudgee.
