With the score at 10-6 and the Bears girls on the attack, star five-eighth Sophie Stammers put through a little grubber for herself and dove on the ball to score.
Stammers, though, was missing one of her tags and was rightly denied the four-pointer, the referee awarding a penalty to the Bears instead after it was deemed a Hawks player removed Stammers' tag prematurely.
That moment came in the 38th minute and over the course of the final stages of the match it proved to be Blayney's best chance at more points.
Bec Ford's stunning kicking game - long and short - ensuring the visitors barely made it out of their own half in the final 10 minutes of the second-versus-third clash, the two blues' four-point win ensuring they remain undefeated after seven rounds of the 2019 season.
... when we were on the back foot a bit the girls stepped it up and the communication was great.
- Hawks skipper Bec Ford.
"They're always coming, they're the Blayney Bears so you never know," Ford said.
"But Liv (Bird) and Soph Stammers, they work well together and Abby (Stammers) at the back, that spine is strong. They always look dangerous."
Jes Pearson opened the scoring for Hawks in the third minute and Hawks really assumed the ascendancy following Lilly Baker's try, her's a neat little kick ahead for herself to touch down centimetres from the dead-ball line.
At 10-0 up Hawks were in control and looked headed to the sheds with a healthy buffer until Courtney Simmons swiveled her way over for the Bears, Bird's conversion bringing the margin back to just four points.
Aside from Stammers' crack mid-way through the second half, both sides' defences looked on song, while Ford's astute kicking made it nigh on impossible for the Bears to get a sniff of the two blues' half, let alone more points.
"That's the game plan, not necessarily scoring more points when we're in front but rolling it in and building pressure. I thought we did that well today," Ford said.
Bears skipper Sophie Stammers was somewhat frustrated with the loss, her side's first of 2019, but said there was plenty of positive signs this Group 10 campaign.
"We just need more talk in attack. Our defence is good but we'll have to keep working on our attack," she said.

"We should hopefully do well again this year. Abby is playing well, Tash (Hobby) as well, her defence in the middle, it's been great.
Both sides come up against defending premiers Bathurst St Pat's in the coming weeks, Hawks next Sunday and the Bears in the final fixture of the opening round.
"We have a lot of new girls so it's just been about getting to training and working on our ball movement," Ford added looking ahead.
"It was positive today though, when we were on the back foot a bit the girls stepped it up and the communication was great."
