The 2019 New Era Cup season has provided the two with a new, exciting challenge though.

Although they could have already been considered the Barbarians' power couple Britt and Carey-Speirs have cemented that status by coming together on Orange club's coaching staff.

Britt is continuing his co-coaching partnership with Ben Gosper this year while Carey-Speirs, who's due in September and unable to play as a result, has made her debut as the club's league tag mentor, taking on the role to "stay involved".

"It is pretty full-on with both of us coaching, it's gets pretty hectic at home sometimes but it's been really good so far," Carey-Speirs said, ahead of the club's first home games at Wade Park on Friday night.

"It has been good, we're both enjoying it," Britt added.

"I can't play this year obviously and I still wanted to be a part of it. No one else really put their hand up so I thought I'd take it on," Carey-Speirs continued.

"It's really good. It's probably the best vibe I've felt in the group, we've got really good numbers and I think there's a lot of potential in the group.

"There is only six girls in our side that had played previously with us, we picked up a few from Group 10, and everyone else hadn't really played the game so we're still learning as well, it's very positive.

"Actually it's just a great feeling around the club this year. We've tried to really push the family aspect, it is very family-oriented anyway, and everyone gets along. It's been great so far."

Both Carey-Speirs and Britt's sides have enjoyed strong starts to the 2019 season too, the former has scored a victory and suffered one close defeat while the latter remains undefeated through the opening two rounds.

"We beat Lithgow last weekend and in round one had a close loss to (reigning premiers) CSU, there was only four points in it, so it has been a good start. That (12-8) loss is the closest we've come to CSU since I've been involved with the club," Carey-Speirs said.

"We're going along well. We beat CSU first-up and then went to Lithgow with 15 players last weekend, it was probably our best performance in a while that one too. We haven't played Portland, so Friday night will be a good way for us to see where we are compared to all the sides in the competition," Britt added.

Barbarians' men will kick-off at 7pm on Friday while the league tag will played as the main event from 8.30pm, the two games opening a huge weekend at Wade Park, with Orange CYMS playing Cowra on Saturday night before Hawks take on Bathurst Panthers on Sunday in Group 10 premier league.

Both Carey-Speirs and Britt said their troops are looking forward to taking the field under lights, a new experience for a lot of them.

"I don't think the club's ever played under lights at Wade Park so it will be good, hopefully we draw a crowd and I'm sure a few of the players will go and watch the other Orange sides over the next couple of days too," Britt said.

"We've actually got two more Friday night games in the works too, both our home games against CSU, so that'll be really good too."

While Carey-Speirs said she's hopeful her side will just continue its development, Britt explained Friday's clash with the Colts will hopefully be another step forward on his side's way to, ideally, a maiden New Era Cup premiership.

They've been building towards that for some time now, the Barbarians have been beaten preliminary finalists the last two years.

They've certainly got the side to do it, Britt said, although he confirmed he'll miss Sunday's clash with a shoulder complaint. Michael Newman shifts from the back-row to five-eighth as a result.

"[Newman's] experienced, he knows how to lead the boys from the halves. He brings a new dynamic too, because he's not a traditional half he plays more like a second lock, a ball-playing one," Britt said, likening Newman to South Sydney legend John Sutton.

"I said before the season I think there's a lot of guys in our side who could break into a premier league squad in Group 10, but with the vibe this year and the feeling the last couple of years that we're on the right track the boys want to stick around, they want to win a premiership with Barbarians.

"That's great too, that loyalty, because the feeling really is there that we can win it this year. It was there last year too but injuries hurt us quite a bit, so hopefully we get it a bit easier there this year."

Barbarians also have the benefit of a number of players bringing more experience to the group, via dual registration.

While Britt and Gosper both have plenty of years of Group 10 experience under their belts, Jared Donlan and Ed Morrish have joined them in playing for CYMS the last couple of Sundays, lending the green and golds a a hand during their injury woes.

Donlan was one of CYMS' best in their premier league loss to Lithgow Workies last weekend too, getting through plenty of work from the bunch and finding plenty of weak shoulders on the carry.

The Barbarians face Portland from 7pm on Friday night at Wade Park, before the Barbies take on the Colts' league tag outfit from 8.30pm.
