We are farmers and business owners in the Calare electorate and we're imploring you to stand up for the future of our region by showing leadership on climate change.
We are currently recovering from the third one-in-one-hundred-year drought that has struck the Central West in the past 16 years.
While the government has sat idle on climate policy, farmers have de-stocked and grappled with heatwaves, record frosts and skyrocketing energy prices.
Mr Gee, this is a big global issue but it is also a serious local issue threatening our futures. We need you to act quickly.
Rivers have dried up as the drought has tightened its grip. Climate change is making these conditions more extreme and more common.
Together, we are calling on you to take action on climate change by:
- Demanding and delivering the integration of climate science into core policies: drought, energy and water.
- Encouraging research and development into innovative renewable energy and greenhouse gas sequestration projects.
- Developing a national strategy on climate change and agriculture.
Mr Gee, while your government squabbles, our region is missing out on opportunities in carbon sequestration and renewable energy.
As voters and land custodians, we've had enough. Climate change is a long, slow process that needs long term action that is sometimes difficult but this is what we elected you for.
We need a government that will take the lead on action against climate change now because our children need more opportunity to thrive in Calare in a modern world.
Mr Gee, this is a big global issue but it is also a serious local issue threatening our futures. We need you to act quickly.
Yours sincerely,
