Council heritage architect David Scobie will run two public workshops in the Orange Civic Theatre foyer.
The workshops are designed to give the public insight into the Heritage Study Review, a chance to share their views on heritage items, gain information on heritage items and suggest additional heritage items.
Orange mayor Reg Kidd said the workshops are one of the first components of forming the heritage study review, followed by professional assistance in site identification and the adoption of the final study by councillors.
This project can make a great deal of difference to the heritage and history of our city
- Mayor Reg Kidd
Cr Kidd said sometimes homeowners get nervous if their home is included on the register because inclusion comes with protections for certain elements of the home.
"But it also comes with it the opportunity to apply for funding to help upgrade and maintain heritage elements," he said.
"Homeowners won't be compelled into undertaking onerous restoration programmes, but if they want to renovate, being included on the register opens the doors for a range of services and grants to help".
Cr Kidd said professional advice on heritage was available to owners of heritage items, or property owners within conservation areas.
During the last review, in 2012, the community came up with another 250 properties to be included.
"This project can make a great deal of difference to the heritage and history of our city. "That's why I am asking the community to start thinking about what is of value to them and whether they want to contribute to the future of Orange by protecting its past," Cr Kidd said.
RSVP to council at heritage@orange.nsw.gov.au before May 18. The closing date for comments will be June 21.
The workshops will take place on May 21 at 5.30pm and May 22 at 1pm.
