The city's former Deputy Mayor took to Facebook on Tuesday to discuss the controversial proposal, which is set for discussion at the evening's council meeting.

Councillors will determine the vialbility of taking over a $1-a-year lease of the facility for the next decade, amid cries from the community that Orange Aquatic Centre can't accommodate the swimming requirements of the community.

According to Cr McRae, the weekly upkeep of the Ex-Services' pool would cost council somewhere in the region of $2500 a week, with the income generated predicted to be a bout a third of that, according to information provided to councillors.

Cr McRae said it would cost an estimated $400,000 to bring the facilities amenities - including filtration and water heating systems, pool lining, change room and showers - up to standard.

"I know people are passionate about the OESC pool, but I am unsure that this is a good use of Council/Ratepayers money," Cr McRae posted.

A report about the pool to be considered at Tuesday's council meeting indicated the costs of improving and running the facility were not set in stone, and may increase.

"These costs, however, have not been able to be verified and are based on visual inspections of the plant and equipment and could be significantly increased," the report said.

"This is the greatest risk of undertaking the operation for the OESC pool."
