After a decade in the trade, starting as a salon assistant sweeping up hair before completing her apprenticeship, Mrs Snowden has opened her own hairdressing business, Strand the Salon.

Will she holds out hopes of growing the business in the years to come, in its initial phase she will be a solo act on the scissors, with a focus on "on-trend cuts and colour services".

"Soft, natural-looking colour work is what I love achieving the most," Mrs Snowden said.

"I feel strongly about beautiful and on-trend hair, and now have my own space to deliver that."

She cited flexibility - for herself and her clients - as a keystone of a business she plans to propel by keeping up to date with the latest techniques through training.

AFTER building her dream business for the past year, Emma Kable has been able to dedicate herself to it full-time.

Ms Kable is managing director of Element Executive, where she contracts administration services to businesses whose business models do not allow for an administration arm.

"I take care of things like diary management, document development, policies and procedures and I specialise in meeting management," she said.

She said getting the agenda right and ensuring participants had all the necessary material in advance meant the time spent in meetings could be cut down.

"Unless they have someone taking minutes, they're trying to participate in the meeting at the same time," she said.

"I can alleviate that responsibility and their time is better spent being part of the meeting."

Ms Kable said administration was often seen as a luxury by business owners.

"But I find that administration can make so many other elements run so much smoother," she said.
