Piles of clothes destined for the St Vincent de Paul Society opportunity shop shelves will now end up in the dumpster, after "bin divers" left the goods strewn across the pavement on Friday morning.

St Vincent's Executive Officer said quality donations are rendered unsellable once they hit the McNamara Street.

"It's not on," he said. "Without being too rude, people wee in the street so we end up throwing those clothes in the dumpster."
Mr Buchanan said the problem of bin divers becomes more profound during holiday periods, as people are clearing out their closets during their time off.
"We get such good quality donations but they don't end up in the shops," he said,
Mr Buchanan said the bins are cleared out at 5pm at night and first thing in the morning, so to prevent the problem reoccuring the best thing to do is to drop off donations in store.
