Brendon Scott Fliedner, 48, of Margaret Street, was found in possession of the items on June 2, 2018, when police saw him walking along Algona Crescent, carrying two backpacks.
During a search of the bags police found two Tramadol tablets - a type of opioid-based pain medication - and a 23-centimetre plastic knife.
According to police, Fliedner was unsteady on his feet and his speech was disjointed. When asked what the tablets were he told police, "they're my knockout pills".
For the offences Fliedner was convicted and given a 12-month community correction order, and is to abstain from alcohol and drugs for six months. The sentence took into account two months he spent in custody prior to sentencing.
Solicitor Gerry Stapleton said Fliedner had a history of drug use.
