THE theft of 100 "unique" sheep from a property near Orange has left police calling on the public for assistance.

The theft occurred from a rural property on Dry Creek Road at Lewis Ponds, around 25 kilometres east of Orange.
NSW Police State Rural Crime Co-ordinator Detective Inspector Cameron Whiteside said the sheep that were take were a dohne breed.
"The theft occurred sometime between March 30 and April 11," he said.

"This breed of sheep is unique in that they are bred for both meat and wool."
This incident comes following the theft of 17,969 sheep from across NSW last year that Det Insp Whiteside said were worth more than $1.88 million.
He said stock theft was a significant problem in NSW and during 2018 there were 372 separate cases of theft and a total of 20,008 animals stolen.
The second most stolen animal last year was cattle with 1454 head worth $1.38 million stolen during the 12-month period.
Rural crime investigators and officers from the Central West Police District are working together on this investigation and have called for anyone with information to come forward.
