The artworks were created by school students from kindergarten to year 10 who took part in a state-wide competition run by the NSW Department of Education and the children's hospital at Westmead.

Orange Regional Gallery curator Lucy Joseph said the works were selected from about 800 entrants and in most circumstances the exhibition is displayed at galleries near regional hospitals.

"There's also six works that are gifted to the hospital," Miss Joseph said.

However, she said in Orange the gallery and health service had a partnership where art from the gallery is displayed at the hospital so the Operation Art exhibition was also held there.

"It's an arts and health partnership we've had for a while," Miss Joseph said.

She said works given to regional hospitals as part of Operation Art were usually created by students who attended schools within the hospital's catchment.

The exhibition was displayed last week and Miss Joseph said people stopped and gave positive feedback while the works were being hung.

A gift-giving ceremony of the six works for the hospital will be held on May 9.
