Named as the 2019 Safety Officer, Steve has accumulated more than 5,000 flying hours across a broad range of aircraft types including aeroplanes, gliders, balloons, airships and ultra-light aeroplanes. He has Commercial Pilot licences for aeroplanes and balloons, and holds approvals and ratings as a Flight Instructor, Examiner and Approved Testing Officer.
The Federation Internationale Aerostation (FAI), the world's governing body for all sport aviation, awarded Steve its Montgolfier Diploma for Exceptional Performance in Aerostation, and Steve also holds the highest level of FAI Gold Sporting Badge with three Diamonds.

Passionate about aviation safety and aviation human factors research and training since 1992, Steve has served as Safety and Technical Officer for the Australian Ballooning Federation, along with the positions of Secretary and President of the Professional Ballooning Association of Australia.
Steve is an accomplished aircraft builder having built several revolutionary balloons and airships for record setting and recreational use. One of these balloons earned him the FAI Henri Mignet Diploma for innovative aircraft design with Steve one of only 12 people, and the only Australian ever, to receive this prestigious award.
