A South Australian man involved in a fatal accident in Canowindra in 1997 never knew a warrant had been issued for his arrest after failing to answer charges related to the accident in court.

He will face court in Sydney for sentencing over the accident.
The man, Rui Filip Alves, appeared in Cowra Local Court on Wednesday, March 20 where he entered a plea of guilty to negligent driving occasioning death.
Alves and three friends were driving from Adelaide to Brisbane at the time of the accident.

Police and Mr Alves agree that he was driving on Tilga Street in Canowindra at 1.50pm on January 16, 1997 when his vehicle was involved in a collision with a Pantech truck driven by a learner driver.
A rear seat passenger, Matthew Pendle of South Australia, died as a result of the impact with the Pantech which was estimated to be driving at only 40km/h.
The bull bar of the Pantech made impact with the passenger side of Mr Alves' vehicle, killing Mr Pendle on impact.
Due to the length of Mr Alves' full name - Rue Filipe Carneiro de Carvalho Alves - difficulties were encountered with the police system.
The case was adjourned to Sydney as both Mr Alves and the family of the victim live interstate.
Mr Alves was extradited from South Australia to Sydney on October 25 last year. He appeared in court in Sydney the same day and was granted conditional bail to report to police in South Australia three times each week.
Legal representative for the Director of Public Prosecutions tendered agreed facts to the Court in Cowra last week, signed by Mr Alves.
According to the facts Mr Alves was excused from attending court when his matter was first heard if legally represented.
When his matter was called no legal representative stepped forward and a warrant was issued for his arrest.
Due to the length of Mr Alves' full name - Rue Filipe Carneiro de Carvalho Alves - difficulties were encountered with the police system at the time.
