Mayor Reg Kidd said the council is pleased to support the Foundation by floating the name-swap.
"We're already known throughout the country as Orange, so it's not a big deal to make the switch to Pink. It's only a few shades to the right on the colour spectrum," Cr Kidd said.
"Historically, the city has drawn its name from Prince William of Orange, a military general in the Napoleonic wars, but it makes no sense that our city is named after a man who never even visited the area.
"The change is going to be so good for the city's marketing approach and potential to attract major events and concerts."
Cr Kidd said the April 1 announcement of the name change had the potential to attract big artists.
"Bathurst has Elton John, but this puts us in the box-seat to make a bid to attract P!NK," he said.
Orange 360 general manager Caddie Marshall said a potential name change would also support local food producer in the area.
"The old name was so confusing, because we don't grow Oranges in Orange," she said.
"We grow Pink Lady Apples, so the name change will not only boost visitation to the area, it will also support our growers."
