Clinton Robert Costello, 35, of Fox Avenue, was described by police as a chronic alcoholic who had made daily calls for an ambulance from December 27, 2018, for no reason other than intoxication, until the offence on January 3, 2019.

Due to previous violence at his home, NSW Ambulance officers would not respond to his calls without police being in attendance.

In the early hours of January 3, police and ambulance officers arrived at his home and spoke with him, but when he was told he wouldn't be taken to hospital he told the ambulance officers to "f*** off".

The ambulance officers and police then waited outside his home because they knew he had a tendency to make a second phone call, however, this time he confronted the ambulance officers on the verandah where he lifted his fist towards them and said "you want to have a go".

Due to his threats they ran from the verandah to avoid being assaulted.

Costello later threatened the police officers and said "you think you can take me, I've done five years in f***ing jail, you think you can take me?".

During the incident Costello was sprayed with capsicum spray when an officer thought he was about to assault his colleague.

In Orange Local Court, magistrate David Day sentenced Costello to a total jail sentence of three years, with a non-parole period of two years and three months, dating from January 3 to April 2, 2021.

The jail term covered two counts of assaulting police and one of common assault against the ambulance officers.

"His record for violence, intimidation and assault is appalling, the offending is aggravated, the ambulance officers are vulnerable victims," Mr Day said.  

He was also given two 12-month intensive correction orders, which are strict community-based custodial sentences, dating from April 2, 2021 to April 1, 2022, for two counts of intimidation.

The orders will require electronic monitoring for the 12-month period, and he is to participate in rehabilitation and treatment for his alcohol addiction.

He was charged with the intimidation after confronting adults and children in the Bletchington Public School car park on the evening of November 6, 2018.

He confronted the group twice, the second time with a knife, and was arrested and taken to hospital due to his intoxication.
