Cecil Donald Collis, 24, of Leura Road, will remain in jail until at least July for the larceny matters.
According to police a wallet was stolen from a car that was parked but unlocked on North Street on June 11, 2018. At 4pm Collis opened a back door to the vehicle and looked inside along with two other males and a wallet was stolen.
At 4.10pm Collis and two other men went into the 7-eleven on Bathurst Road and used a card that was in the stolen wallet to buy several items worth a total of $32.
Collis was given a seven-month and 15-day jail sentence with a three-month and 23-day non-parole period, for stealing the wallet from the car.
I only picked up what's in the car for my mate, I'm not saying anything else, I'm not a dog.
- Cecil Collis
The sentences will begin from April 5 and his earliest release date would be July 28, because he is completing the balance of a parole period in custody.
He was also given a three-month jail sentence for using the stolen bank card.
Collis was stopped by police who were patrolling Calang Street when they saw him driving in the opposite direction at 4.30am on May 20.
According to police, the officers conducted a u-turn to follow him when he turned onto Algona Crescent but he "harshly accelerated" and turned into Illawong Place where he was stopped.
Police knew he was not licensed to be driving so arrested him and a later search of the car he was driving located two televisions, one on the back seat and one in the boot, which were suspected to be stolen.
He was quoted in the police report as saying, "I only picked up what's in the car for my mate, I'm not saying anything else, I'm not a dog".
Collis pleaded not guilty to possession of suspected stolen property but was found guilty in Orange Local Court.
He was sentenced to one-month in jail from April 5 to May 4 for possession of the televisions.
Collis was also convicted without further charge for driving an unregistered vehicle and being a learner driver who was unaccompanied.
Collis appealed the severity of the sentence for possession of the wallet in Orange District Court in May.
Acting Judge Geoffrey Graham upheld Collis's appeal and backdated the jail term to July 15. Due to the back-dated sentence Collis became eligible for release on parole on April 17, 2019.
