Jason Hamling, who also chairs Orange City Council's sport and recreation committee, said he wanted the feasibility study planned for next financial year to be moved sooner.

The study would take into account a second indoor pool and a kids' wet area, which would include play equipment. 

"It really needs to be an indoor area so you can use it 12 months of the year," he said. 

Although the council will consider leasing the club's pool for 10 years, Cr Hamling believed facilities should be located on one site. 

Kate Curtin has been taking her four children to the club's pool for swimming lessons and said securing lessons at the aquatic centre was already difficult.

"There's 600 kids doing swimming lessons at that [club] pool - I'm not sure how 600 people are going to be fitted in between 3.30pm and 5.30pm, because that's all it can be every day," she said. 

"Young families have the biggest growth in population - people will just not do swimming lessons anymore and that's a disaster, especially after the drownings this summer."

She said she found out about the closure from a piece of paper at the front desk, explaining the reasons for the closure.

"There was no consultation of members that it was happening," she said. 

"The Polar Bears [swimming club] are really devastated."

Asked what she preferred between the council leasing the facility or building a second indoor pool, Ms Curtin believed neither option was the answer.

"I think the first preference is make the club that makes the money maintain it," she said.

"They need to prove they shouldn't before that burden should be placed on anyone else."

Club chief executive Daniel Perkiss told Tuesday's council meeting the facility was losing $100,000 a year and it would cost $6.5 million in upgrades and running costs during the next 10 years.
