Remember, the Myer store in Summer Street was originally Dalton Brothers store. The Daltons have been mayors of Orange, one a long serving member of Parliament, and of course James Dalton was a Papal Knight.
Liz Edwards, a local historian and author, is just finishing a book on the incredible contribution the early Daltons had on Orange, the state, and the nation.
I believe there are only four weekends in the year when there is not a major event scheduled in Orange. Let's work together and get cracking to make it none.
The City of Orange Veterans Classic golf tournament had several hundred visitors from four states here for over a week of golf held at our three courses.
Special recognition was given to David Gunner, who has been on the executive of the NSW Veterans Golf Association for 12 years as treasurer.
David is stepping down from the position but will undoubtedly be still involved with the enthusiastic group of Orange golfing volunteers that do a tremendous job in maintaining this tournament.
The Triathlon NSW Club Championships on the weekend had over 850 participants, with an estimated 1800 visitors in total with supporters and families.
A big congratulations to the Orange Cycle and Triathlon Club for taking out the prestigious second division award for most successful club. I attended the presentations at Orange Ex-Services' Club, and it was literally standing room only.
Orange City Rugby Club held its annual 10s tournament with teams from Sydney, Newcastle, Griffith, Leeton, Forbes and composite sides with players from all over the state.
The Aidan Brice All Stars were once again runners-up to the powerful Newcastle Wanderers. Well done to the volunteers from Orange City for another successful event.
Recently we had the welcome lunch for new residents at Orange Botanic Gardens. It was interesting listening to the various reasons people have made the move to Orange.
We certainly do have so much to offer, but often, perhaps, we overlook the simple things, like friendliness and supportive services.
The United Hospital Auxiliaries of NSW met in Orange last week, and I was so impressed with just how much they contribute to our health services.
The branches represented from across the state raised $11 million, with nearly a million voluntary hours logged, which equates to about 550 full-time positions.
I admire their work immensely, and reiterate comments I have voiced previously that governments - state and federal - should never lose sight of the significant contributions volunteer organisations bring to our communities.
Coming up this Saturday we have Harmony Day celebrations in the courtyard area near the library. All are welcome, with great food and national dress, songs and dances on offer, too.
Two other major sporting events are approaching: the Great Volcanic Mountain Challenge, with some trails now open on Mount Canobolas, on Sunday, March 31, and, on the same day, the Newcrest Orange Challenge cycling event.
