NSW Roads and Maritime Services has decided to drop the speed limit from 80km/h to 60km/h on a 2.6-kilometre stretch at the very end of the road.
The 80km/h zone will resume 270 metres from the Mount Canobolas Road turnoff where the road becomes Lake Canobolas Road.
A popular route for cyclists, the decision followed poor crash history and high casualty rates.
The RMS also judged the rural road to have a low alignment standard with a lower speed limit hoped to improve safety.
Speed limits will not change until new speed limit signs are installed.
Motorists have been advised to always observe the posted speed limit signs on the road.
