One of them, the Bathurst Cycling Classic, continues to grow its influence not just at home but abroad.

The next edition of the classic's Blayney to Bathurst takes place this Sunday and once again gives club riders the opportunity to qualify for the UCI Gran Fondo World Championships, which will be held in Poland later this year.

On Sunday cyclists will make their way from Blayney all the way to the new finishing line on Mount Panorama's Pit Straight, finishing at the foot of the iconic circuit.

This is the third year the Bathurst event has acted as a UCI Grand Fondo qualifier.

Bathurst Cycling Club president Mark Simons said the Bathurst Cycling Classic has added to the city's already growing footprint on an world sporting scale.

"This is part of our great international list of events in Bathurst," he said.

"We've got the UCI qualifier here for the Bathurst Cycling Classic, the World Cross Country Championships coming here which were recently announced, and the UCI BMX rounds here as well. That's not to mention the motor racing we've got." 

The race comes in its long and short course variants of 110 kilometres and 70km respectively.

This gives cyclists of different skill levels - whether they be making their first race start or riding in national-levels series - the chance to race many other riders of a similar ability. 

Simons believes the design of the short course makes it an ideal track to take on as a first-time race.

"You don't have to be a member of a cycling club to participate in the Bathurst Cycling Classic," he said, with competitors set to flock from all over the central west region.

"It's great as an introduction event for those that might not have even considered that they want to race a bike. 

"They can start off doing the 70km level at their pace, don't have to commit to that full-licensing level, and get a taste of racing.

"From a club perspective it's great because builds that bit of hunger to get involved, develops their riding skills to a higher level and really pushes them to get better times."

The Bathurst Cycling Classic is also about the criteriums held in the centre of the city and the hill climb at Mount Panorama.

The criterium is a fast spectacle of colour and top-speed racing as riders complete loops around Kings Parade while the Hill Climb sees riders attempt a challenging 4km ascent up the Mount.

The Village also makes a return at this year's finish - a popular post-race venue at the Mount for food, drink and entertainment.
