This year's 20 cars are preparing to leave for their eight-day, 2500-kilometre journey in support of Western Care Lodge, which provides accommodation for cancer patients undergoing treatment.

The funds will go towards renovations and replacing furniture as the lodge enters its eighth year. 

With drier conditions expected for this year's drive, Colin Nayda thought he might escape a repeat of 2008 when he became bogged nine times in one day.

"By the end of the day, we'd broken down," he said.

But the fun and camaraderie is what brings participants coming back 11 years after John and Terry Davis started the fundraiser, with the Rotary Club of Orange Daybreak helping out for the past two.

Starting and finishing in Orange, they will travel to Sandy Hollow, Gloucester, Wauchope, Dorrigo, Glenn Innes, Narrabri and Nyngan.

All cars will donate $500 to the cause, but Mr Nayda and Peter and Bruce Perriman also have their own side fundraiser, busking as the Three Amigos.

"None of us can play, none of us can sing so if people want us to stop, they donate," he said with a laugh.

The event has raised more than $600,000 since its inception.

The cars will leave from the Robin Hood Hotel next Friday, March 22 at 11am, returning on March 30.
