The federal government and the Alcohol and Drug Foundation announced a team would be based in Orange as part of the fourth round of the program.
Led by Orange City Council, the team partners will also include Central West Police District, Orange United Sports Club, Glenroi Community Group, Orange Community Drug Action Team, Lives Lived Well, Orange TAFE, the NSW Office of Sport, the Department of Family and Community Services' Western NSW estate management unit and Orange Aboriginal Medical Service.
Alcohol and other drug harm prevention activities will be conducted across Orange, with a particular focus on Glenroi and Bowen.
Alcohol and Drug Foundation NSW/ACT manager Dr Lisa Simone said the team's first task would be to develop a community action plan with the help of a $10,000 grant.
"It looks like a really good collaboration," she said.
Dr Simone said the program was about primary prevention in young people and many lessons had been learned from other areas in earlier rounds.
She said one community had focused on helping those who spoke English as a second language to understand the consequences of drug use, while others organised sporting games or art activities to involve young people in constrictive hobbies.
The completed plan will then provide a platform to apply for more funding for projects, up to $30,000, which could include peer support, mentoring, education in schools, support for young people or resources to reduce alcohol harm in pregnancy.
Dr Simone said the bulk of projects were worth between $10,000 and $15,000 each and no two regions were the same.
"One solution doesn't fit all," she said.
The announcement brings the total number of drug action teams across New South Wales to 70 and 244 nationwide.
