But Canobolas Rural Technology High School student Ebony Hay is also balancing a successful junior field athletics career that requires intensive training.
Hay, 17, has just won both the under 20s NSW state junior championships and the under 20s junior country championships in the hammer throw and discus throw.
And she was second in the open hammer throw at the country titles.
"It's a hefty load," she said of balancing study with her sport, training and travelling.
"Hammer is more my professional event, discus is more my fun one," she said.
"My coach Ernie Shankelton [from Canowindra] he started me with discus and then he was like 'you look big enough to do hammer' so then I started hammer and I've just liked it ever since.
"I like hammer, you get to put a lot of strength into it.
"There is a lot of technique too, big time, I've had it come back at me a few times. The footwork is very different to discus, it did take a while to get used to, but I just had to keep practising because I wanted to do really well at it.
"I got hit with the hammer, it does like to get you back if you don't throw it properly."
I've had it come back at me a few times.
- Ebony Hay, athlete
Hay has thrown the three kilogram hammer 49.78 metres but now has moved to the senior size which uses a four kilogram hammer and has thrown that 43.24 metres.
Now she has her eyes on the world junior titles, representing Fiji, her father's homeland.
"My big goal is to qualify with Fiji because Australia, it is a lot harder to get into. I may as well use the culture to get in there, to qualify for Fiji," she said.
"It could be with Australia, but at the moment they are the goals I have, they are quite reachable at the moment.
"I train six times a week, morning and afternoon. I get to train at school, when I have my free periods.
"That has actually helped me becomes a better athlete as I have to be time efficient."
"I go to Canowindra two times a week and almost every couple of weekends I am Sydney competing down there. It is a hefty load."
