Magistrate David Day condemned a man for vigilantism after he went to a house where he heard some of his family members were being abused and threatened a resident with a hatchet.

He gave Cade Morgan, 32, of Pippin Way, a two-year intensive correction order and 300 hours of community service for a charge of attempt to intimidate.
"The intimidate was aggravated by use of a weapon, a hatchet," Mr Day said.

Although he said Morgan had a bad record for violence, a recent assessment deemed him to be a reasonable prospect for rehabilitation.
Solicitor John Song said Morgan was on the ground when he swung the hatchet, and the victim was standing on a verandah that was about shoulder-height.
"There was a verbal argument between the victim and Mr Morgan and his sisters. His grandmother called Mr Morgan," Mr Song said.
"One of the sisters was driving her car, had a collision close to the victim's premises. This caused a verbal altercation.
"The words he heard was [the victim] was going to jump on their heads, Mr Morgan took matters into his own hands."
