ALL-day car parking at Moulder Park has received extra backing from a Moulder Street resident having increasing difficulty finding a parking space outside his home.
Nick Aspros lives near the Anson Street intersection with his sister’s family, but said the age-old expectation of being able to park directly outside a person’s own home was disappearing.
Mr Aspros it was not Orange Public School parents dropping off and picking up their children who were the causing the congestion.
“Basically it’s the people who work during the week in the CBD and they don’t have any other place to park [all day] unless they pay for it.”
Mr Aspros said Anson Street parking was timed at two hours to the Moulder Street intersection, meaning Moulder Street was the first untimed option.
“The number of people travelling to work and back in Orange is getting larger and larger and parking supply is not equalling demand,” he said.
Mr Aspros said his household owned four cars and had to manage the driveway space owing to his sister’s need for regular medical appointments as she suffered from severe arthritis and could not walk long distances.
He supported opening Moulder Park netball courts to all-day parking to ease demand on residential streets.
“It’s a space that’s not being utilised – it’s only ever used for Sunday markets every now and again,” he said.
Council spokesman Allan Reeder said the FutureCity CBD upgrade had put nothing off the table.
"Whether it’s the idea of parking on the former Moulder Park netball courts, the Ophir Cark Park or the Sale Street car park, the aim is to consider all options including new ways to let people know where parking is available such as parking space sensors and apps," he said.
"There was a variety of feedback from the community when the idea of allowing parking on then netball courts was placed on exhibition for comment. That feedback will inform discussion when the overall CBD upgrade is considered."
