An investigation is under way after a man was shot during a home invasion in the Central West during the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Shortly before 3.30am, four men forced their way into a home on Gobolion Street, Wellington, armed with shotguns and a machete.
Police have been told the 37-year-old occupant was assaulted and struck with the machete, before being shot in the groin.

He was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics, before being taken to Orange hospital, where he underwent surgery, and is now in a stable condition.
A crime scene was established at the home and detectives from Orana Mid Western Police District will conduct a full investigation.
