The Warriors downed the green and golds thanks to half centuries from Murray Fisher and Jeremiah Murphy, eventually winning the round nine clash at Max Stewart Park by 62 runs.
The victory pushes the second-placed greens to 30 competition points, a full 12 points behind Kinross Blue although the result of the students’ round nine clash against clubmates Super Kings wasn’t available at time of print, leaving that margin unconfirmed.
Fisher blasted 62 and Murphy 52 on Saturday afternoon, the duo combining in a 109-run, third-wicket stand after Orange City lost Gary Burton (7) and Darcy Climpson (4) early in the innings.
That stand helped push the greens to 4-150 from their 35 overs, before CYMS were restricted to 6-88 in reply.
Rick Canham (34) batted superbly to top score for the green and golds while Connor Monks (12) was the next best, but the task proved too big for the fourth-placed outfit.
CYMS also suffered defeat in second grade on the weekend, losing out to a Kyle Nonnenmacher-inspired Centrals outfit.
After Kevin Costa (62) led the green and golds to a more-than-competitive total of 6-171 Nonnenmacher played a true captain’s knock.
He came to the crease at 3-34 and controlled the chase from there on, finishing 55 not out as his side won by three wickets with an over to spare.
Orange City also scored a victory on Saturday afternoon, defeating Kinross in a clash that was notable for Nathan Rosser’s return as much as anything.
Rosser, one of the club’s best-performed first grade players of all-time, played his first game in green for the summer and promptly finished 76 not out as his side chased down Kinross’ 150 for the loss of two wickets in just 26 overs.
With Cavaliers enjoying a bye, Centrals and Orange both made up ground on the competition-leading maroons.
In third grade Spring Hill (9-162) downed Waratahs (9-158) and Gladstone (7-129) edged out Cavaliers (128), while Centrals and Orange City picked up wins too.
The red and blacks scored a relatively easy win over CYMS by three wickets, the chase led by skipper Damien Caughlan (40), while the latter defeated Kinross by seven wickets.
