However, Central West Greens campaign coordinator David Mallard said the party was still planning to put forward candidates in state seats across the Central West.

“The preselection process is under way at the moment,” Mr Mallard said.

“The plan for The Greens is always to stand a candidate in the lower house as we want to give people an option to vote for a candidate who stands up for their values.

“Even in those seats where they are not likely to get up.”

He said nominations have been called for and an announcement about an Orange candidate would be made in the next couple of weeks.

“There’s been a couple of people having conversations about standing, the call for nominations has just opened now,” Mr Mallard said.

“A lot of voters really start paying attention in the last few weeks.

“The Greens more broadly have been campaigning.” 

However, in the wake of high-profile upper house MP Jeremy Buckingham quitting the party in December last year, Mr Mallard conceded it is a tough time for the party in NSW.

Speaking after announcing his candidacy as an independent in December last year, Mr Buckingham – a former Orange City Councillor – said The Greens were “toxic”.

Mr Mallard said he hoped loyal Greens voters would “really look at the issues that really matter at this point and vote for someone who will stand up for the local community”.

“We are looking to make sure that we run a strong campaign,” he said.

“Obviously the Nationals are desperate to get the seat back and they are pretty much happy to bribe the electorate.”

Mr Mallard said the party and its chosen candidates will stand up for issues surrounding the environmental protection, climate action and social justice.

“We will put that message to the voters,” he said.
