Stephanie Hollis, a fourth year student at Charles Sturt University’s School of Dentistry and Health Sciences in Orange, was awarded a foundation scholarship by the Pierre Fauchard Academy, an international dental organisation.
The $1000 scholarship is awarded to dentistry students who, according to the criteria, “demonstrate great potential for developing into an outstanding leader in the profession because of his/her participation in the university, the dental school and/or the community”.
My ultimate goal is to use my skills in a rural or remote public health setting.

Nominees are also required to have above average marks in their studies, and show “qualities of integrity, imagination, initiative and communication skills”.
Ms Hollis, who comes from Fishing Point on Lake Macquarie south of Newcastle, said it was a surprise and an honour to receive the PFA scholarship.
“I was very grateful to be nominated to apply for the Pierre Fauchard scholarship, and feel honoured to represent Charles Sturt University as the recipient,” Ms Hollis said.
She said she would put the money to good use as she pursues her remaining studies and, all going to plan, career in rural Australia.
“The grant will assist me throughout my placement year based in Dubbo,” Ms Hollis explained.
“My ultimate goal is to use my skills in a rural or remote public health setting.”
Head of the School of Dentistry and Health Sciences Professor Boyen Huang said Ms Hollis was an outstanding student and worthy recipient of the scholarship.
“We are delighted for Stephanie,” Professor Huang said.
“[We] thank the Pierre Fauchard Academy for its interest in the school and its support of our students.”
The PFA is an honorary dental service organisation that was founded in 1936 by Doctor Elmer Best, a Minnesota dentist, and currently has in excess of 10,000 fellows worldwide.
