Orange PCYC will be holding an Internet Safety Night on Tuesday with police showing young people how to stay safe and protect themselves in an online environment, while also talking about some of the legal ramifications of online behaviour.
Orange PCYC assistant manager Dave Cleal said it was important to have these sessions, especially for children of a younger age.
“I guess with the onset of suicides and stuff like that from cyber bullying and stuff like that, kids are able to access the internet pretty regularly and it needs to be policed by parents,” he said.
“These nights are important for education – for parent education and for the children so hopefully some of the younger ones turn up who aren’t into it yet but we’re looking forward to seeing it.”
He said it was a state-wide initiative by police ahead of the worldwide awareness day.
“We’re holding it across 64 clubs night state-wide and it’ll be run by police with civilian involvement as well,” Mr Cleal said.
The session is free and open for all parents, families and kids – targeted at those aged eight to 18. The hour-long presentation begins at 7pm Tuesday at the PCYC.
