The 18 children set to start next week face an easy transition having spent two years learning literacy, numeracy and socialisation from a classroom at the Glenroi school, according to LiveBetter’s preschools team leader, Peter Callaghan.
Mr Callaghan said it was a year-long process to get the four and five-year-olds school ready, which included ensuring they knew where everything was located around the school, what to bring each day and identifying any special needs.
He said LiveBetter speech pathologist and occupational therapists had spent time with the students to work out what help they might require.
“It’s amazing the amount of children which present with speech delay. We can work with them to strengthen those skills,” he said.
“The best time to tackle this is when they’re young so by the time they get to kindergarten, they’re not disadvantaged.”
Emily and David Ainsworth are the parents of four-year-old Izack Ainsworth, who has special needs. They said during his time at preschool, teaching staff helped him toilet train and improve his speech.
“When it comes to outside help coming into the school, they’ve been so accommodating,” Mrs Ainsworthy said. “It’s made the transition so much easier.”
Teacher Kylie Dalton said the parents of her preschool graduates did not experience the same stress saying goodbye to their little ones on the first day of school.
“They walk into kindergarten and it’s ‘bye mum’ with no tears,” she said.
