I Am A Cool Kid has only had four starts, but after showing his potential in an all-the-way win at the Australian Turf Club on Saturday it’s clear Williams’ stable has a genuine star in its ranks.

With three wins and a second in his four jumps to date, I Am A Cool Kid would qualify for the $150,000 heat at Mudgee on March 3 but Williams says, at this point in time, the six-year-old sprint sensation is nothing more than a race-by-race proposition.

His history tells you why.

After buying him as a yearling, Williams nursed the six-year-old back from the brink of death at one point in his life.

Forced to be patient with the talented gelding, after his first start, a win at Bathurst, I Am A Cool Kid was sent straight to the paddock after pulling up a little scratchy.

Two days ahead of what would have been his second start, he was rushed to Scone hospital with colitis, which is the inflammation of the large intestine.

He spent two weeks in intensive care and, Williams says, her promising sprinter was lucky to survive.

At the horse’s third start, back in July last year, he won by space but bled so out he went again, incurring the mandatory three month ban. 

“He has spent more of his life in the paddock than he has on the race track,” Williams said after Saturday’s win at Randwick.

“We'll just wait and see. We'll take him home and see how he is, we can't really make any forward decisions with this horse, we just take it day by day.

“He is out of a Zabeel mare but hasn’t shown a lot of stamina in the past, but he has never been race fit and we really don’t know what he can do.

“I just hope his run of bad luck has finished.”

In Saturday’s super impressive win, I Am A Cool Kid defied a wide barrier draw and found the lead virtually from the outset.

There, the bay gelding and jockey Adam Hyeronimus were never headed, rounding the Randwick bend at the front of the pack before showing a ridiculous level of acceleration to brain the field in the $75,000 highway handicap.

Bathurst trainer Dean Mirfin and I Am Capitan rounded out a CDRA quinella, but the Tyers Park gelding was never in the frame for victory.

Ironically, Mirfin and Williams took out the one-two in last year’s country championship heat at Mudgee, and with two stand-out hopes heading into this year’s qualifier there’s every chance both can again push to be part of the $500,000 final at Randwick in April.

“It has been such a long road with him and we've persevered because he is so talented. It's such a huge relief. It's really nice to have a horse that can gallop,” Williams continued in her post-race interview.

“We really don’t know how good he is yet, he is still untapped. He hasn’t had a lot of pressure on him. Each preparation he has had one start and had to be spelled for one reason or another.”
