Betty met Geoffrey Key when she was asked to show him around Sunday school after his family moved to Orange when he was just 13 years old.
While an age gap meant love took a little time to blossom, Mrs Key became best friends with Mr Key’s sister during the time they were both at school.
After graduation from Orange High School in 1951, Mr Key moved away to become a teacher, returning to Orange on the weekends to see his parents.
It was while Mrs Key was working for his mum and dad’s insurance business that the young romantics fell in love.
“I worked for his father and with his mother – they liked me,” Mrs Key said. “By this time I was a teenager and we’d go to the tennis together when he was home from teaching on the weekends.”
The two love-birds now have two children, Bronwyn Shulte and Malcolm Key, as well as five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
They said their family keep them busy, but spending time with one another is the secret to their success.
“We do everything together, especially now we are retired. We have a motor home and go on holidays together twice a year,” said Mrs Key.
“We’ve had a lovely life.”
