The 7.5 magnitude quake rocked Orange’s sister city in February, killing 140 people.
Orange City Council’s sister cities committee appealed for donations in July, with $2300 coming from a Rotary movie night.
Committee member and former councillor Chris Gryllis said he was “very happy” with the amount raised.
“People have been very generous to donate a substantial sum,” he said.
The funds are likely to be channelled through Mount Hagen’s school.
The council has applied for federal government assistance so staff can travel to Mount Hagen to review the city’s planning documents, first formed during another visit 12 years ago.
