At 7:53am businesses and homes between Mitchell Parade and Summer Street experienced blackouts, with power restored to the majority of customers by 8:23am.
Supermarkets Woolworths on Anson Street and SUPA IGA on Summer Street were also affected.
At 8:30am, power was yet to be restored to parts of Anson Street, Chestnut Avenue, Mitchell Parade and some adjoining streets.
There were also isolated properties near Nashdale, Lucknow, Spring Hill, Millthorpe and Manildra without power.
Essential Energy Community Relations Manager David Crough said specialist line crews were working to restore power to the remaining 90 customers who were still without power in the city.
He said the work would involve repairs to a power line which they hoped would be complete within the hour.
Mr Crough said a lightning strike to the power network was the most likely cause.
