As of 8.30pm on Saturday, the Curembenya fire in the Goobang National Park in Cabonne was rated ‘out of control’.

But, thanks to the efforts of NSW Rural Fire Service crews from the Canobolas Zone and further afield, by 3.30am on Sunday its status had been updated to ‘being controlled’, with 2151 hectares burned.

According to a statement by the Canobolas Zone brigade, backburning efforts which would have assisted in the containment of this fire were hampered by the rain from the storm which hit the area late on Saturday.

“Changeover crews will continue to strengthen containment lines and work to bring this fire under control,” the statement read.

“Aircraft will again be deployed to assist in the firefighting efforts.”

Spotter aircraft will also be deployed to check for any new fires which may have been caused by Saturday’s storm.

There were two other small fires in the northern section of Goobang National Park on Saturday afternoon, both of which were quickly contained.

The temperature in the area is forecast to reach 32 degrees on Sunday, with winds blowing at about 17km/h.
