For the second time the Cargo Road vineyard will host astronomers Trevor and Tina Leaman who will guide guests through classical Greco-Roman, Wiradjuri and other Indigenous skylores.
Winery owner Lee Bell said the Leamans plan to take skygazers on a cross-cultural exploration of the summer night sky above Mount Canobolas, with particular focus on Orion, the Pleiades and the Southern Cross.
She said Dark Skies at Dindima follows a sold out event her and husband David Bell ran at the winery during the Winter Fire Festival.
We have for a long time wanted to host an event which would acknowledge the Wiradjuri people
- Lee Bell
“Dindima comes from the Wiradjuri word which means 'group of stars’ and we have for a long time wanted to host an event which would acknowledge the Wiradjuri people,” she said.
“We discovered it wasn’t just us who had an interest in astronomy and its link with the place where we grow beautiful grapes and make wonderful wine so we’re hosting a second event to continue to share this.”
From 7-10pm on Saturday, January 12, the public is invited to pack a picnic and their binoculars to learn from the PHD researcher and outreach astronomer.
There will be telescopes, fire pits, hot drinks and marshmallows provided, with wine available for purchase from the cellar door.
If the weather turns nasty next weekend there’ll be an indoor option.
Booking details are on the Dindima Wines website.
