In fact many would argue they’re not known for making any decisions at all.
You only need mention the lack of public toilets in Robertson Park to be reminded that it can take several years for our councillors to reach a conclusion on something.
In fact in the case of Robertson Park it has already taken several different groups of councillors to not reach a conclusion on this issue.
While there are sometimes good reasons for delays in the decision-making process, including a lack of pertinent information, sometimes it simply comes down to a group of disparate people unable to agree with each other.
It’s no secret that not all of the councillors are close friends outside of the Council chamber, however as elected local government representatives there’s no reason why they can’t work together inside the Council chamber.
The belief that this current council is unable to make decisions quickly is growing momentum.
Councillor Jeff Whitton told the Central Western Daily he too fears this current crop of councillors is knocking back more decisions than it’s making.
Even more concerning perhaps was Cr Whitton’s suggestion that when public pressure about an issue was added in the chamber, some councillors buckled.
Cr Whitton gave two examples – the recent backflip on a development application for toilets in Robertson Park two weeks after it was voted through and the industrial business park proposal around Orange Airport, which was passed by the previous council.
He said while councillors had every right to change their minds they were obliged to make decisions on what was best for the entire community not a vocal minority.
Cr Whitton is obviously receiving feedback from the community that people are annoyed by council’s apparent indecision or in some cases its propensity to stop a development from proceeding.
At a time when there’s concern about the city’s retail and manufacturing sectors it’s important council stay focused on moving our city forward.
We live in a fantastic city that has so much to offer, it would be a shame if progress was brought to a halt due to our council’s indecision and inability to have any real foresight.
