After cleaning up on December 17, the three-year-old filly cleaned up by half a length in the fifth race on Sunday for trainer Alison Smith.
Starting a long way back 400 metres into the 1400 metre race, jockey Anthony Cavello guided Supreme Gem around the outside to thunder home to claim its second win from five starts, and his second win on the back of her.
Supreme Gem took the win ahead of Lucy’s Legacy and Larynx to claim the lion’s share of the $22,000 on offer.
The filly wasn’t bothered by an incredibly dry and hard track underfoot at Towac Park.
The filly started the race at $6 behind New Zealand gelding Star Of O’Reilly ($2.45) who finished in sixth after a strong start to the race, leading for the first 1000 metres of the run.
Lucy’s Legacy was the only other horse at shorter odds – $3.90 – than Smith’s filly.
The final 400 metres promised a tight final run, but Cavello had placed Supreme Gem in a stellar spot to burst to the line.
It’s only Supreme Gem’s sixth run on the track for Smith and incredibly, five of those starts have led to placings.
Meanwhile, Orange trainer Joe Curran missed out on a place by a nose in his first run at Towac park in two decades.
Racing in the Central West Trailers Class 3 Handicap in the last race on Sunday, Concours was beaten out by Not A Sound, Westlink and High Dive in the top three spots.
It was Not A Sound’s second win on the trot after a win in Dubbo on December 10.
In race six, a last-grasp dive by Western Parade wasn’t enough to sneak past New Zealand horse Unresolved in the John Davis Motors Benchmark 66 Handicap on Sunday.
Unresolved, who was out at $26, started led nearly the whole 2100 metres of the race, and held on in a dash to the line over the final 100 metres.
The Garry Lunn-trained gelding won by 0.1 of a length ahead of Western Parade and half a length ahead of Ima Baker in third.
Both second and third were trained by Ganya Williams, with Western Parade a $3.70 favourite for the sixth race on Sunday.
Orange trainer Mick Plummer’s Snappy Diamond finished in fifth in the Towac Park run.
