Traffic monitoring results from Chapman Street in late October recently came in, revealing speeds up to 110 km/h. 

Councillor Tony Mileto read the results aloud at an Orange City Council meeting, calling the speeds extreme.

“There’s going to be a catastrophic accident out there based on the figures which have come back,” he said. 

“Here we are, we’ve got a small village where there’s 93 kids [aged between six and 16] – 120 citizens live out there – we’ve got a 50km/h speed limit, yet we’ve got cars travelling at 104km/h, 102km/h, 106km/h, 105km/h, 110km/h.”

Cr Mileto said 13 vehicles were travelling faster than 90km/h during the two-week period, while seven were recorded travelling faster than 100km/h.

“Then we get to Carcoar Street – I can’t call this person an imbecile because it would be an insult to an imbecile – this person was travelling at 121.3km/h at two o’clock in the morning,” he said.

He said a second driver was recorded travelling at 107.7km/h at 5am, while a large number of cars travelled at 80km/h.

In Seaton Street, Cr Mileto said speeding was not limited to the wee hours of the morning, with one driver recorded travelling at 92km/h at midday. 

“Most of these people are travelling above 60km/h and between 90km/h,” he said. 

“Those figures are alarming, I just couldn’t believe it when they came in and even within the [Spring Hill community] committee, it beggars belief that people would be travelling those speeds at those times of the day.”

Cr Mileto said he would press the matter with the City of Orange Traffic Committee when it meets in the new year and figures would be passed to police. 

Trees were planted at the village entrance along Forest Road earlier this year to encourage drivers to slow down. 

Speeding drivers through Lucknow have been increasingly caught by a mobile speed camera deployed to the Mitchell Highway, while double lines down the centre of William Maker Drive were deemed the best solution to slow drivers in that area.
