Western NSW Local Health District operations executive director Mark Spittal said people should have a ‘to do’ list, especially if they are going away on holidays.
He said if people take medication they should make sure they have enough on hand, have prescriptions ready for any refills if needed, check when pharmacies or the family doctor’s surgery is open over the break and keep the details handy.
Hospital emergency departments are always open, but they are there for emergencies.

Mr Spittal said people should also check their first aid kit and stock up on basic over-the-counter medications, make sure there’s sunscreen and shade available for everyone, there’s a good stock of non-alcoholic drinks and that people are careful around waterways and while driving.
“Hospital emergency departments are always open, but they are there for emergencies,” Mr Spittal said.
“If you’re not experiencing an emergency, consider calling the HealthDirect line on 1800 022 222 where you can speak with a trained health professional.
“If you do come to an emergency department, remember that people are seen in the order of urgency, not in order of arrival.
“This is a busy time of year for our hospitals, and our doctors and nurses are working hard to give the best care they can.
“Our communities can help relieve some of that pressure by being prepared, staying healthy and well over the holidays, using the emergency department only when it’s necessary, and by being patient and respectful while they’re in the hospital.”
