Orange City Council will spend $300,000 to re-build the intersection of Anson Street and Matthews Avenue during the first month of 2019, which will result in the road being closed for three weeks. 

Roadworks will begin on Monday, January 7 and run through to January 25, but minor landscaping and remediation work will happen after the intersection has re-opened. 

Residents will still be able to drive in and out of their properties while the works are ongoing.

Council received a grant from Roads and Maritime Services for the improvements. 

The plan is to raise the height of the road surface across the intersection by 11 centimetres, with a 1.5-metre long ramp to bring vehicles to the height of the new section of road, which traffic engineers believe is the best option to slow drivers.

New street lighting will also be installed. 

The intersection already has ‘Give Way’ signs from both directions of Matthews Avenue, but the raised platform is designed to prompt drivers from all directions to slow down and avoid potential accidents.

Orange mayor Reg Kidd said the council has written to residents in the neighbourhood to keep them up to date with the intersection project.

“Because the whole intersection will be closed for about three weeks, it’s important that local residents can know about it ahead of time, so they can plan alternative routes,” Cr Kidd said.

“The council has timed this work to keep the impact to a minimum … when some people are away and while schools are on holidays.”
