The pair met in Townsville, and were married in 1968 in Milton, New Zealand, which is Mrs Clegg’s home town.
“It’s just a matter of give and take … it’s hard to explain, it’s just a normal marriage with ups and downs but we’ve had more ups than downs,” she said.
She said Friday had felt like a “normal day”, but she was “chuffed” to have made the milestone.
“Fifty years is quite the effort,” she said.
Mr Clegg agreed with his wife’s message, laughing that he couldn’t take over the kitchen and made sure to wipe up.
“We’ve just been really good together,” he said.
The pair moved around Australia and the world with Mr Clegg’s job in the army, meaning they had to lean on each other and their two boys when they moved.
But family remained a rock in good times and bad.
“We’ve got two fantastic boys which can be attributed to Bev, two fantastic daughters-in-law and five fantastic grandchildren,” Mr Clegg said.
